Foundation History
The UCHS Benevolent Trust Fund established in 1987 for "the purpose of assuring that United Church Homes and Services. would always be able to reach out in benevolent ways to help older adults who are in need." The income from this endowment is used "to help persons where the greatest need exists" both on the campuses of the Centers and in the wider community. In 2001 a separate Foundation was established to solicit, disburse and protect the funds donated to support the mission and ministry of United Church Homes and Services.
From 1997 through 2005, over $4,000,000 has been donated to UCHS in annual giving. During that same period of time, nearly $4 million dollars has been designated in planned and estate gifts. In recent years UCHS has chosen to focus on investing in the growth of the Foundation to insure the continued viability of this organization and its ongoing commitment to benevolence. On an annual basis, approximately $250,000.00 is distributed from the UCHS Benevolent Trust fund to support residents who are on Medicaid, to supplement the cost of residence for individuals who have outlived their resources and to assist other UCHS residents who are in need. Our goal is to double foundation distribution within the next five years. In order to accomplish this, Foundation gifts must double as well. Each UCHS community has funds established to enhance programs or meet needs at that community. The funds for each site include Campus Enrichment, Capital and Benevolent Funds. Residents who contribute to these areas benefit directly from the programs developed on their campuses. The UCC Family Fund was created in 2002. This fund was initiated by the Foundation Board to assist individuals who are closely associated with the United Church of Christ or United Church Homes and Services. Gifts to this fund will assist in covering the costs associated with entrance into a UCHS community for individuals who are in financial need. The Foundation also manages two funds specifically for employees; the Employee Assistance Fund and the Leinbach Education Fund. The assistance fund provides support for employees who find themselves in financial hardship through no fault of their own. It is used to pay utility costs, medical expenses or other essential items specific to a hardship situation. The Education Fund disburses money to full time employees to help pay the cost of college tuition. In return, Education Fund beneficiaries agree to remain employed with UCHS for a specified period of time. With continued annual support along with opportunity and information on planned and estate gifts, the UCHS Foundation will grow. The result of this growth will ensure support to UCHS to enrich the lives of those we serve and provide benevolence to those in need. It is a commitment to excellence now and in the future. |
