Make Your New Year's Resolutions SMART

December 14, 2015

With the New Year on the horizon, many of us are already beginning to think about our New Year's resolutions.  We have well-intentioned plans to make improvements, begin new projects, or take on new challenges.  But how do we follow-through on these aspirations?

Let's look at what can go wrong with resolutions.

Often people set  goals that are too big. Be realistic and honest in your expectations.

Choose carefully who you tell about your goals.  Don't tell the wrong people, those who will pressure you too much or chastise you instead of those who will actually help you realize you goal.

Another reason people fail to keep resolutions is they  focus on "how" to accomplish goals versus "why" they want to accomplish them, ignoring the "reason behind the reason," which could provide more powerful and lasting motivation.  If you can't come up with good and meaningful reasons, then it's probably not a good resolution.

Goals are more likely to be reached if they are "smart",  meaning specific, measurable, attainable, rewarding, and time-limited.
