Meet Jim Jones

Resident Jim Jones and his wife Nancy moved to Lake Prince Woods in June of 2019. A Hampton Roads native, Vietnam War veteran, and practicing attorney of 56 years, Jim is passionate about physical fitness and exercise, specializing in yoga.

            Jim’s passion for fitness and yoga began 20 years ago as a spin and indoor cycling instructor for Lifestyle Fitness. Now the Chesapeake YMCA, it was the first fitness center in Hampton Roads to open a spinning room for indoor cycling. Jim was soon recruited to teach their expanding yoga program and later attended a four week yoga retreat center in Yogaville, or Satchidananda Ashram, led by Sri Swami Satchidananda, one of the first Yoga masters to bring classical yoga traditions to the western world. Previously Jim was holding two yoga classes a week in Portsmouth and in 2021 he will start his first online fitness class at the Sattvic Space Yoga and Healing Center.

            A typical yoga session with Jim at Lake Prince Woods begins with breathing exercises. Jim likes to use a stone ceremony consisting of 8 stones to represent the 8 “limbs” of yoga; two stones for wisdom, and one each for peace, love, hope, joy, heart, and strength. He reads a quotation or teaching from his mentor Satchidananda and then leads residents through arm movements, chair movements, and finally eye movements to strengthen eye muscles and improve vision. Jim always ends his lessons with some form of meditation, whether through a prayer or silence. When asked what he wished his fellow residents would gain from his lessons, he said, “I hope to help them improve their physical strength and balance as well as relieve their stress to help them face the challenges of aging.”
