Resident Crosses Skydiving Off Bucket List

July 23, 2021

New Residents Ron and Joyce Cates have always been spontaneous. They visited the Lake Prince Woods community and after two short visits decided to make the move. This past weekend Joyce saw a friends Facebook post on Skydive Suffolk, a local premier skydiving center. Intrigued, she called and scheduled a jump for Ron that afternoon. Ron, now 81 years old, ascended 14,000 feet to fulfill his bucket list item of skydiving. “I was surprised by how cold it was,” said Ron. “This is such a beautiful country. While I was falling, I was able to point out areas I recognized and I was blown away by the beauty of all the blooming trees.” Ron said that the Skydive Suffolk team invited him to return for another trip on his 90th birthday so they could all celebrate. Both born and raised in Portsmouth, Virginia, Ron and Joyce met after an introduction from Ron’s sister-in-law. They built a home together in Bennett’s Creek where they lived for 50 years. Joyce recalls that they broke ground on the home the day she went into labor with their only daughter. “Ron left me at the hospital!” joked Joyce. After Ron retired as a contracting Officer for the US Navy and Joyce retired from 35 years in banking, they began looking to downsize their home and making their move to a continuing care retirement community.

“The main reason we chose Lake Prince Woods was because of the continuing care options,” shared Joyce. Ron’s mother came to Lake Prince Woods’ skilled nursing facility for rehabilitation so they were experienced with what steps were needed as they aged. “As soon as we walked through the doors of our cottage we felt at home,” said Joyce. “The neighbors are fantastic and the staff is so friendly. It’s everything we could have asked for.”
